A Master of Public Health is an esteemed degree, valuable in a variety of health care occupations. It is a requirement for many public health positions and preferred for others, preparing graduates to assist in the maintenance and promotion of high quality health standards in federal, state, and local health and environmental organizations.

 

Perhaps most important, those who hold the degree can anticipate continued growth in career opportunities over the next decade due to new roles in the emerging health care system.

 

Graduates of the Master of Public Health program demonstrate:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices for identifying public health needs and administering public health programs, including courses in community health, environmental and occupational health, biostatistics, epidemiology, health care administration and policy, research and evaluation methods, health care planning and marketing, and developing health promotion programs.
  • The ability to evaluate public health needs and health promotion concepts in order to be active knowledge-makers in the public health field.

The U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2006-07 Edition states that a master's degree is the most significant credential for positions in this field. Employment in all areas of health service management, including public health, is expected to grow faster than average during the coming decade. Median annual earnings in this field in May 2004 were $60,430. Salaries of those employed in the industries which employed the highest number of health service managers ranged from $60,000 to $87,000.
